Below are some excerpts from a book on aromatherapy for women and children.

A must have oil for your first aid kit.

Chamomile (German) - Matricaria chamomilla/Chamomile (Roman) - Anthemis nobilis: There are several types of Chamomile, two of which are commonly used in Aromatherapy, German and Roman. The German tends to grow wild and is known as the True or Wild Chamomile, the Roman is nearly always cultivated. The name Matricaria, from matrix (womb), gives a clue to the use of this herb by the ancients. Dioscorides and Galen prescribed it for female disorders and fever and chamomile tea is still an aid to relieving female conditions and easing childbirth. German chamomile is an annual herb, the oil being extracted from the flowers and seeds of the plant. It is cultivated in England, Hungary, Germany and Belgium. It is a wonderful deep blue in colour, this due to its high azulene content, is sweet, mellow and hay-like in aroma and has a strong odour at all levels.

Roman Chamomile is a perennial herb commonly grown as a scented lawn.In England there is a famous chamomile lawn at Buckingham Palace.

The essential oil is extracted from the flowers of the plant. Roman chamomile is pale blue or pale yellow in colour and is more fruity in aroma than German Chamomile.

The anti-inflammatory properties of either chamomile are without doubt, especially in dermal inflammation, and although their use is more physical than emotional, chamomile is soothing and calming, often helping to break the vicious circle of tension and effect. Its uses include treatment for nervous upsets, feverish conditions, menstrual and menopausal pain, dull aches and pains, including cramps, rheumatic and gout pains, skin eruptions, acne and scabbing, dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.

Roman Chamomile, like German, is very calmative and has positive benefit for many women’s complaints such as menstrual pains, premenstrual tension, heavy or prolonged bleeding and menopausal difficulties.  Massaged onto the pelvic area in a 5% dilution daily or twice daily as needed.

It is also good for colic and teething problems.

In a 1% dilution in fractionated coconut oil for massaged onto abdomen for colic and gums for teething will work wonders.

Never use any essential oil in or near the eyes, however chamomile has been noted for its use in treating eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, and a cold tea bag placed over the eyes can bring effective relief. Either Chamomile is excellent to use in treating children, as it is especially mild yet therapeutically sound -

Roman Chamomile is ideal for use as a mild nerve sedative for children, help with fevers, and especially for teething problems.

Earache: In addition to infection, anything from a cold to poking something in the ear can cause earache, however always check to see if there is any infection, as if not investigated, this could lead to serious complication. To ease pain and discomfort, massage around neck, outer ear and jawline with Lavender and Roman Chamomile. If the doctor has checked the ear and there is no damage to the drum, with his agreement, a cotton wool plug (not too small), soaked in a 1% blend of warm oil with one drop of either of the above oils should bring relief.

Asthma: (Also see Allergies) Asthma attacks can be precipitated by exposure to a large range of stimuli, including allergies, emotions, exercise, drugs, and infections.

Asthma is a variable condition, as attacks can occur at any age, for many reasons. Although normally occurring in early life, asthma attacks are commonly associated with allergies such as Hay Fever and Eczema.

Relaxation and avoiding stress can help to avoid the frequency of attacks. Use Marjoram,  Frankincense, Lavender, Chamomile and Melissa.

The circumstances of the attack need to be taken into consideration when choosing the blend, it being a good idea to have an appropriate blend already made up if attacks are commonly caused by similar circumstances. These oils are most gentle, yet effective - to soothe both physically and emotionally. Most allergic reactions can be effectively treated with oils of Chamomile and Melissa. If your child has an attack, whatever happens, stay calm and reassuring. She will pick up on your anxiety, so no matter how heartbreaking or frightening it is to see someone you love fighting for breath, panic will make it worse, so stay calm and have a sniff of the blend yourself. Don’t forget the Rescue Remedy if necessary. Massage can be highly beneficial, giving the patient the reassurance, comfort and calm needed. Massage the above in 50mls of oil, in long, even, reassuring strokes up along the spine, over the shoulders and on the chest. Alternatively place one drop of each on a handkerchief and inhale to release tension and spasm as heat from steam inhalation is contra indicated during an asthma attack.
